South Africa Car Hire

Compare & Save on car hire in South Africa

If there’s one country where having your own set of wheels is a real bonus it’s South Africa. This beautiful country is so vast, with must-see experiences waiting for you from east to west, top to bottom, that having your own transport really will help you make the most of your trip. A land of fantastic contrasts in terms of landscape, architecture, climate and culture, South Africa is like no other country on earth. Spectacular wildlife, buzzing cities, and world-class wines, nothing can quite prepare you for all you’ll encounter in this country that’s larger than life.

Things to Do in South Africa

In a country of this scale, you can really tailor your holiday to suit you. If you’re looking for a coastal getaway then Cape Town is an absolute must. A breathtaking city by the sea, you can whale watch here, visit the soaring Table Mountain, and sample some of the finest wines in the country too. Or try Durban, with a unique and rich cultural mix, on the Indian Ocean it shows off its Indian influences with pride, in its cuisine and architecture. For wildlife, head east to Kruger Park – twice the size of the UK and the place to be for safari adventures. And for those interested in the history of the South Africa, check out the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Cradle of Humankind, near Johannesburg – a huge collection of caves rich in hominid and advanced ape fossils.

Driving Around South Africa

Driving in South Africa is much like driving in the US – albeit on the opposite e side of the road. Vast expanses of wide road criss-cross the nation, really giving you a sense of the scale of the place. And just like the US, as you travel between regions the landscape, and language, changes dramatically. You’ll find a number of border posts en route, and many of the highways and motorways have manual tolls. Watch out in inner city areas of Johannesburg and Cape Town, where crime can be a problem, keeping windows shut. For two of the most stunning drives in the world, head for the Garden Route in the south, which takes you along the Indian Ocean. Those on their way to Kruger Park can drive through what is possibly one of the most idyllic spots on earth – Blyde River Canyon, with spectacular views that you’ll never forget.
