Cork, on the banks of the River Lee, is located in the south of Ireland. The second largest city in the country, behind the capital, Dublin, it's a historic city packed with places of interest and a fascinating past to discover. Truly a river city, Cork is built along either side of the Lee, connected up along the way by more than 30 bridges, making it one of the most scenic cities on the Emerald Isle. Once a small merchant town, it's now one of the most culturally vibrant in the country, developing a healthy tongue-in-cheek rivalry with its closest counterpart, Dublin.
Things to Do in Cork
Culture vultures will find plenty to keep them entertained in Cork throughout the year, with lots of music and arts venues to choose from. Time your visit for the end of October and you'll be treated to the annual jazz festival, while heading there at the start of November will see your visit coincide with the ever-expanding film festival. Sports fans can check out a truly traditional Gaelic Games, similar to the Scottish Highland Games, which take place throughout the year too. The Elizabeth Fort affords some of the best views over the city, and a market takes place inside the fort's historic walls every Sunday, and while you're there, pop next door to the 19th century gothic St. Finbarr's Cathedral. Drive Around Cork
Most car hire companies in Cork operate out of Cork Airport, which is in extremely close proximity to the city. Driving within the city itself is good, although inner city streets tend to be narrow and steep. The main arteries into the city are wide, spacious roads, with all of County Cork and Limerick being well linked. Dublin is now a 2.5 hour drive along the newly-improved M7 and M8 motorways, with Blarney Castle, Barryscourt Castle and Cape Clear all popular tourist spots a short drive away.
