Kefalonia is the largest of Greece’s Ionian Islands, and it’s also one of the most naturally beautiful. Here it’s the landscapes and nature you come for rather than the island’s towns. In 1953, an earthquake flattened the majority of the island’s settlements, so much of the architecture as it stands today is relatively modern. Outwith the surviving villages of Assos and Fiskardo, there are rugged mountains, soaring coastal cliffs and breathtakingly verdant forests to explore – as well as delicious food and great wines to be sampled across the island.
Things to Do in Kefalonia
If you’re looking for an idllyic beach getaway, you’ll find plenty on offer in Kefalonia. For the most secluded beach spots, rent a boat at Agia Efimia to explore the hidden bays that can only be reached via the water. If you’re keen to explore some of the island’s stunning mountains, there are hiking trails a-plenty – or try a different method of transport and opt for a horse-riding tour instead. Boat trips are also available to nearby Ithaca and are highly recommended. And those with an interest in the island’s history will love the Roman Villa just outside Skala, its mosaic floors still more or less intact. Drive Around Kefalonia
Getting around Kefalonia really does mean getting your hands on your own set of wheels. The infrequent island bus service means that unless you’re a yacht owner or hiring a car for your trip you’ll find it hard to reach most of the island’s highlights. You’ll find car hire options plentiful in the main tourist towns of Lassi and Argostoli, as well as at the airport and ferry ports. Roads here are incredibly well maintained for the most part, although if you’re heading further inland or off the beaten track then expect roads to narrow significantly.
