Further afield, the Akamas Peninsula is a protected wildlife and natural site at the furthest northwest corner of the island, and although you can’t drive right into the park on tarmac roads, there are wonderful walks and tracks to cover on a bike or in a 4x4.

Other attractions on Akamas are the loggerhead turtle sanctuary and the Baths of Aphrodite where the goddess supposedly bathed. Heading inland from the coast you will come across small traditional villages where life has scarcely changed for the past fifty years, and scattered amongst the hills are some of the settlements abandoned by their Turkish populations after the Turkish invasion of the north of the island. Driving Around Paphos

Driving in Cyprus is straightforward compared to Greece or Turkey – the roads are well-surfaced and signage is clear, and the Cypriots drive on the left. There is an excellent road and motorway network linking Paphos Airport to the coastal regions of the northwest and resorts further south, (the A1 and A6) but if you are keen to explore deeper into the mountains, then a 4x4 is essential, as many of the roads and tracks are unsurfaced.
